Did you lose a crown or filling?

Did you lose a crown or filling?

At some point, a crown or filling may fall or come loose naturally or be a result of some type of trauma to the mouth. For many, losing a crown or filling is often shocking but rest assured that there are plenty of solutions. The dentists at our Washington DC practice often treat patients with missing crowns or fillings. Here is what you need to know:

What are the causes of a crown or filling loss?

  • Chewing tough, hard or sticky food or candy
  • Tooth decay
  • Trauma to the mouth from accidents
  • Deteriorating dental cement

What should you do after losing a filling or crown?

  1. Remove and save the crown. If possible, remove and save the dislodged crown or filling to prevent you from accidentally swallowing or choking on it. If you have swallowed it, do not be scared as it typically passes through the system without any issues.
  2. Schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. It is very important to seek an opinion from your dentist. If you cannot see the dentist immediately, you should protect the tooth as much as possible. Thoroughly clean the area and by gently brushing inside of the tooth where the filling or crown is missing. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating for increased protection.
  3. Treat pain or sensitivity. If you cannot see a dentist immediately, you may experience some pain, especially while eating or drinking. When you lose a filling or crown, the nerve at the root of your tooth can become exposed which can cause pain. You can take over-the-counter pain medication for temporary relief.
