Many of our patients are surprised to learn that their headache pain is caused by their jaw joints, muscle spasms around the head or neck, or an incorrect bite. Headaches are one of the most common signs of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), a condition that stems from the jaw. Other signs of TMJ include pain behind the eyes, painful muscles, worn teeth, tingling in the fingers and hands, clicking or popping in the jaw joint, sensitive teeth, earaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness and other issues.
Root canal therapy has a reputation for being pretty scary, but it really does not deserve it. For the majority of patients, having the procedure done is no more painful than other minor dental procedures. In fact, most of the discomfort is experienced due to infection before the root canal, not during the treatment itself.
In the past, teeth that were decayed, chipped or fractured were often fixed using metal fillings. While these fillings helped restore the health and usability of teeth, their obvious appearance made them a less than ideal solution. Luckily, the same problems can be treated today using tooth-colored fillings that mimic the natural appearance of your own teeth.
Otherwise known as a "deep cleaning," scaling and root planing is a procedure required for patients with chronic periodontitis, a disease of the gum and bones. Chronic periodontitis occurs when there is a significant amount of bacteria, plaque and calculus build-up beneath the gums causing the bones to resorb away potentially leading to the loss of teeth.
