Bone Augmentation Q & A

What is bone augmentation?

Bone augmentation is a process by which specially trained dentists such as Dr. Rex can rebuild your jawbone structure. They usually perform bone augmentation by placing a bone graft against existing jawbone. By adhering to existing bone, the bone graft steadily augments it, growing strong, new bone.

Bone graft material can come from several sources, but most often a synthetic bone graft material is used that contains the proteins and collagen necessary for bone growth.

When is bone augmentation necessary?

Bone augmentation can help if you need dental implants, but don’t have a sufficiently healthy bone structure to support them and hold them in place.

Candidates for bone augmentation often find that their jawbone structure is unhealthy, overly soft, or has low density due to conditions such as:

  • Trauma to the jaw or face
  • An injury
  • Periodontal (gum) disease.

If you’ve been told in the past you can’t get dental implants because of thin or soft bone tissue, talk to the team at DC Dental Spa about how bone augmentation can help.

What can I expect during a bone augmentation procedure?

With advances in the field, Dr. Rex can perform bone augmentation as a minimally invasive procedure that’s virtually pain-free. Your dentist first numbs the area to ensure your comfort and then either extracts your unhealthy tooth or begins work on the space where your teeth are missing.

Once your tooth is extracted, or if it was already missing, your dentist then exposes your jawbone by making a small incision in your gum tissue. They attach the bone graft to the natural bone they’ve just exposed.

After they’ve attached the bone graft, they stitch up the gum tissue. Newly grown bone then absorbs the bone graft over time. Depending on the state of your natural bone and how much grafting was applied, full bone growth and healing usually takes between six and nine months.
